Sports lighting is a rapidly evolving science. It is no easy task to provide the right lighting for athletes as well as fans and broadcasters.

LED lighting is becoming the only logical choice for stadiums, courts and fields but the proper design and installation can be a major challenge.

It’s a given that LEDs will save upwards of 60% in energy costs when replacing typical High Pressure Sodium (HPS) and High-Intensity Discharge (HID) fixtures. LEDs have also demonstrated the ability to improve light levels and color rendering in almost every application.  But LED is extremely powerful technology and without the proper design and controls, it can turn out very wrong.

There are well documented cases of LED applications producing too much glare for athletes and fans. These incidents are not only difficult and expensive to remedy, they can harm the overall reputation of LED lighting.

That is the challenge to our industry and one that must be met. We are constantly looking for the optimum balance between the needs of professional and amateur athletes and fans and broadcasters. Safety, performance, and the sports experience are all depending on us.

Each project is different and requires careful, individual attention and design. We know, we’ve been there. We found the right recipe for the Seattle Mariners when we lit Safeco Field and as the following case study shows, we got it right at Yankee Stadium.

We have learned there is no set formula for sports lighting. Each project must be evaluated for it’s unique characteristics and demands.

Success is not in getting the bid, its in the eyes of the athletes and fans.
